Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystems Project

Welcome to the ASCLME Project

Over the next five years, the nine countries of the western Indian Ocean region, including Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and Tanzania, will work together through the Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystems (ASCLME) project.

1      Global Environment Facility (GEF)
The Global Environment Facility (GEF) was established in 1991. It is an independent financial organization that helps developing countries fund projects and programs that protect the global environment. The GEF is providing $12.2 million in funding to support the implementation of the ASCLME project.

2      UNDP-GEF
UNDP-GEF supports the development of projects in the environmental focal areas of biodiversity, climate change, international waters, land degradation, persistent organic Pollutants and ozone depletion.

UNDP is the UN’s global development network. The ASCLME project is implemented by UNDP.

5      South West Indian Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP)
SWIOFP is a multinational research project which aims to ensure that the marine resources of the western Indian Ocean are ecologically managed for sustainable use and the benefit of the region’s riparian countries. It is funded by the GEF and, together with the ASCLME project and the WIO-LAB project, forms part of the suite of projects that make up the ASCLME Programme.

6      Addressing land-based activities in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO-LaB)
This project, entitled Addressing land-based activities in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO-LaB), addresses some of the major environmental problems and issues related to the degradation of the marine and coastal environment resulting from land-based activities in the Western Indian Ocean region. It is funded by the GEF and, together with the ASCLME project and SWIOFP, forms part of the suite of projects that make up the ASCLME Programme.

7      The South African Institute of Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB)
An internationally recognised institute for the study of aquatic biodiversity, SAIAB is the host of the ASCLME project.

8      The African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP)
ACEP is a multidisciplinary project of South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Kenya, the Comoros, the Seychelles and Madagascar, that uses science to explore the deep unknown and develop sustainability, and ultimately to benefit people.

9      Regional Programme for the Sustainable Management of the Coastal Zones of the Indian Ocean Countries (ReCoMaP)
ReCoMaP is a regional programme for the sustainable management of the coastal zones of the countries of the Indian Ocean. Seven countries of the region are concerned by the project, namely Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Somalia, the Seychelles and Tanzania.
