The fisheries research ship FRS Algoa is owned by the South African Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT), through its Marine and Coastal Management (MCM) agency. It forms part of South Africa’s fleet of research vessels which comprises three fisheries research ships and an Antarctic research/supply vessel, SA Agulhas.
The FRS Algoa was previously a whitefish trawler, Ludovic Jego. It was purchased by South Africa in 1991 and converted into a multi-purpose fisheries research ship. Today it has a length of 52 m, a speed of 13 knots and a crew complement of 35, including 12 scientific personnel. It is well equipped with modern navigation and communications systems, as well as six scientific laboratories and a computer room. The Algoa is used for pelagic recruit and pre-recruit surveys and is presently the primary vessel in the sardine anchovy recruitment programme (SARP). It is capable of deploying commercial-sized trawls and operates 24 hours a day.
