Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystems Project

Welcome to the ASCLME Project

Over the next five years, the nine countries of the western Indian Ocean region, including Comoros, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa and Tanzania, will work together through the Agulhas and Somali Current Large Marine Ecosystems (ASCLME) project.

The ASCLME Project has combined forces with sister project SWIOFP, to bring you a combined newsletter, Current Affairs. The first edition has just been published and covers news about both Projects over the last year. At 56 pages, it shows just how much work is being done in the region!

Current Affairs is published in English, French and Portuguese in the same edition.

The hardcopy edition also includes a DVD copy of the joint ASCLME/WIO-LaB documentary, Rivers of Life, Oceans of Plenty. We are working on a way of showing this film online and will publish a news story on the ASCLME website as soon as it is available. The film was produced by Francois Odendaal Productions. The film has been released in four languages: English, French, Portuguese and Swahili, and all are available on each DVD.

What is this?

"L’organisation de cette réunion était formidable. La logistique associée à l’organisation d’une réunion telle que celle-ci n’arrive jamais par accident.


L’humeur des participants était particulièrement enthousiaste, et chacun a exprimé son soutien et ses encouragements au projet. Il est toujours possible de dire comment une réunion se passe par le ton des questions, et les questions soulevées au cours de cette réunion étaient hautement constructives et bien informées.

Ce projet a fait plus de progrès au cours de sa première année d’opération que tout autre projet avec lequel je n’ai jamais été associé. Ce qui le rend particulièrement impressionnant est que c’est sans aucun doute le projet le plus complexe, et certainement le plus difficile à maîtriser. La portée physique du projet couvre non seulement de nombreux écosystèmes, mais aussi une gamme diverse de langues et une large gamme de conditions socioéconomiques. Mais si le ton collectif de cette réunion constitue une indication de la manière dont le reste du projet se déroulera, nous avons tous des raisons de nous montrer optimistes et d'anticiper une conclusion dont nous pouvons tous être fiers. "
